In addition to sanctions imposed on Russia by Western countries, many corporations voluntarily exited the Russian market following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This column analyses the determinants and consequences of firm exit from Russia, focusing in particular on US-traded firms. It finds that the stock market performance of exposed firms began to worsen even before the start of the war, likely reflecting increasing risks in the region.
