Ukraine Aid Spent in the US

Last updated July 2024

More than half of the aid approved for military assistance to Ukraine in 2022-2023 was spent in the United States of America, increasing our country’s GDP.

Here’s how it works: in congressional aid packages, the majority of funding is appropriated under “Presidential Drawdown Authority.” This allows the president to “draw down” or transfer weapons from the Department of Defense to Ukraine so it can fight back against the Russian invasion.

The money itself is spent on new defense contracts with American manufacturers. Older equipment sent to Ukraine is replaced with newer and sometimes more advanced systems.

The new weapons and equipment are manufactured in plants across America. They employ thousands of engineers and factory workers and boost local economies. Not only does aid to Ukraine create new jobs in the US, it stimulates our manufacturing and technology sectors.

This funding has been spent in over 300 congressional districts across the United States. Yet one-third of the congressmen representing them voted against providing aid to Ukraine at least once.

Not only did they vote against defending our democratic ally from Russian aggression, they voted against the interests of their constituents and local economies.
